Iron River Lions 2012 Flag Pole Project
In 2011 we commissioned a new sign to identify Iron River's Moon Lake Park. At that time, there was a flag just south of the new sign. However, Old Glory was displayed on a rusty pole. The club decided to replace the decrepit pole with a new one befitting Lions' pride in our national symbol.
Lion John Hancock coordinated the search for a vendor, ordering the pole, and forming a team to install the pole.
At our Blueberry Festival final planning meeting, all the Lions present gathered in front of the sign and flagpole for a group picture.
Lion Vice President Nan Olson provided direction for the work crew.
"Some assembly required" is an understatement. After reading and re-reading the instructions (which were written for a different pole) and multiple calls to the manufacturer, the pole was ready for installation.
None of the instructions mentioned the difficulty to be encountered in setting the pole at a 90 degree angle.
First came a hole.
Followed by a form.
Concrete to stabilize the pole was donated by Todd's Redi-Mix.
Some adjusting was required.
Once the concrete had cured it was time to assemble the flagpole...
...and slip it into the sleeve embedded in the concrete.
The result proved to be well worth the effort.
